Summary: My grandson fell in love with this book!
Review: My 5-year-old grandson was sure he wanted to be Wall-E for Halloween. Then one day he came home from kindergarten saying, "I want to be a Big Black Fish that goes whummmmm" (waving his fins). We couldn't figure out what he was talking about until his teacher told us that she had read "Swimmy" to the class that week! He was so in love with the book that he not only changed his mind about his costume, he insisted on having the book for his own. Your child will love it too.

Summary: All the little fish get eaten in the first few pages
Review: Is it just me or doesn't it disturb people that all the little fish except cute little swimmy get eaten in the first few pages of the book? This book was read to my 4 year old at preschool and he had nightmares and did nothing but talk about little fish getting eaten for days. I can't even say that eating all the fish really added anything to the story. Perhaps with an older child, you can discuss the benefits of working with others to help fight off oppression, but at 4 it just seems to be a careless handling of the concept of death. Amazon rates this book 4-8, so be aware of what you are getting.

Review: my kids (almost 5 and 6 1/2 love this book. it teaches that you can make lemonade from lemons. we have read it to them many times and they just really like this little fish called swimmy.

Review: I purchased this book on May 15th and did not receive it until June 15th ... thirty days to get a book via mail!!! Very disappointing considering the fact that I needed it for a lesson that I was teaching to my Pre-K class. Will think twice when ordering from this venue again.

Summary: A Nice Adventure with Courage, Leadership and Teamwork
Review: Swimmy is a small black fish, part of a school of small red fish, and when a large tuna eats the rest of his school, he finds himself alone and frightened. He travels through the sea, viewing many strange sights, until he finds another school of red fish. When he asks them to come exploring with him, they are too afraid of being eaten; but he devises a way to venture forth safely, and together they chase the bigger fish away. This simple adventure is illustrated in an unusual collage of ink-prints.
Swimmy's courage and leadership, the teamwork and cooperation of the small fish, and the creativity with which they solve their problem, combine to make a satisfying story. The predatory behavior of the bigger fish is presented neutrally, as neither good nor evil -- and since fish are less easy to identify with than other kinds of animals, the loss of Swimmy's family isn't too traumatic. Still, sensitive children may have trouble with this story's beginning, so parents may want to use caution.
